Thanh HoaDo Van Lan and his wife bought a tiger for 130 million VND from Nghe An and brought it back to their hometown to cook and sell for a profit, but were arrested by the police.

On May 28, Thanh Hoa Provincial Police busted a line of trading in high-cooked tigers. The investigating agency is completing the dossier to consider prosecuting Mr. Lan (48 years old, from Xuan Duong commune, Thuong Xuan district) and his wife, Ms. Nguyen Thi Oanh, for violating regulations on wildlife protection.

In addition, Mr. Hoang Van Hien, 48 years old, and Nguyen Van Lieu, 55 years old, both from Cau Giat town (Quynh Luu district, Nghe An) were also detained to clarify their related roles.

On April 15, police caught Mr. Lan and some people preparing to butcher the dead tiger at his home to cook it. Searching the house, the police seized a 145 kg tiger carcass being kept frozen, 5 kg of animal bones, 10 kg of finished product and 6 claws.

The owner and his wife claimed to have bought the tiger for over 130 million VND. In mid-May, when he was discovered, Mr. Hien turned himself in and declared that he had sold tigers to Mr. Lan, while Nguyen Van Lieu was assigned to transport tigers from Nghe An to Thanh Hoa to deliver to customers.

According to Article 244 of the 2015 Penal Code, those who arbitrarily keep tigers in captivity to kill meat or make tiger bones or skins will be fined from 500 million VND to 500 million VND. two billion dong or imprisonment for 1-5 years. If the number of captive tigers is more than 12, violators can face a penalty of 10-15 years in prison.
