The ‘slave’ regulation for domestic workers is fiercely criticized

One woman decided to share on social media a long list of rules her maids had to abide by. But she didn’t expect it to turn into a disaster.

In a video shared on Instagram on May 26, the woman claims it took 45 minutes to write the “rules and rules” of 12 things on the whiteboard.

If the two regulations “do not open the door to strangers” and “always keep the house clean” are considered quite reasonable, the other regulations are fiercely criticized. Specifically, this employer asked the maid to be allowed to use the phone only at night for about 1 hour “when the children are asleep”.

This mistress also asked the maid to go to bed at 10pm at the latest, wake up at 7am and only move in areas with cameras when the owner is not at home, except when bathing and doing housework.

In the comments section, the online community expressed outrage at the woman’s treatment of the maid. “To my knowledge, the maid is also a human being like us, not a machine” – one person said.

In an article in the Straits Times in 2017, the Singapore Ministry of Manpower said on its website it was quite clear what jobs a maid could or couldn’t do.

“However, it is impractical to detail every task because these tasks vary from household to household,” the ministry said. They also add that “a productive working relationship” depends on give and take between the maid and the host.
