At least 31 people were killed in a stampede in Nigeria

Nigerian officials say 31 people were killed in a stampede when hundreds gathered for a charity food distribution event at a church in Rivers state, southern Nigeria. According to CNN, most of the victims are children.

Speaking to the press, Grace Iringe-Koko, a spokeswoman for the Rivers state police, said the disaster happened in the city of Port Harcourt. Hundreds of people have come to receive charity food since the early morning of May 28. However, some people lost their patience, rushed to push each other and break through the gate, causing a heartbreaking tragedy.

Some sources said that most of the victims were transferred to a nearby military hospital. Police at the scene are monitoring the situation, the investigation is being urgently conducted.
