Floods cause serious damage in China, Brazil

At least 15 people have been killed by heavy rains in southern China. The hardest hit provinces were Fujian and Yunnan. Floods have also destroyed many roads, bridges, communication systems and electricity.

Earlier, China’s Ministry of Water Resources activated a level 4 flood emergency response in anticipation of heavy rain in 7 southern provinces of the country.

In the northeastern region of Brazil, at least 79 people were killed, dozens were missing due to severe floods that occurred over the weekend. The state of Pernambuco suffered the heaviest damage with at least 44 people killed and thousands displaced.

Rainfall measured in parts of the state on Friday night and Saturday morning amounted to 70% of the total May rainfall forecast in the region.
