The mouth of the giant well is where the water flows in. After flowing down through the steps, the water seeps through the porous rocks and back into the aquifers. The temperature at the bottom of the well is always 5 to 6 degrees Celsius lower than the temperature above.

Not only an ancient water storage structure, Chand Baori today is also an architectural wonder with 3,500 steps with a symmetrical structure, covering 3 sides of the well, leading to the bottom. The well bed is square, the deeper it goes down, the narrower it becomes, creating a space like an upside down Egyptian pyramid.
