‘Mona Lisa’ is covered with cake
The famous Mona Lisa painting was suddenly smeared with cake by a man posing as an old woman.
According to Russia Today, the incident happened on May 29 at the Louvre Museum of Fine Arts in Paris (France), where the famous artwork of Leonardo da Vinci is displayed.
According to eyewitnesses present at the museum at that time, an elderly “woman” suddenly jumped out of a wheelchair and rushed towards the Mona Lisa painting to find a way to destroy it. After trying unsuccessfully to break the glass that protects the painting, the person pulled off a wig, smeared cake on the glass, and shouted, “Think of the Earth. All artists think of the Earth. I do it. this is for the earth”.
According to news site The Local, the painting of the Mona Lisa, known as La Joconde, was protected by bulletproof glass, so it was not affected after the attack. The man causing the disturbance was then taken out by security, while museum staff immediately cleaned the glass after the incident.
The Louvre Museum has not yet commented on the disturbance.
This is not the first time the Mona Lisa portrait has been targeted for vandalism. In 1956, the lower area of the painting was severely damaged by an acid vandal. Immediately after the vandalism, the work was placed in a bulletproof glass frame.
In 2009, a Russian woman got angry and threw a cup of tea at the painting La Joconde. The broken cup hit the glass, but Leonardo Da Vinci’s masterpiece was fortunately undamaged.
