The elm tree has many different names such as locust tree, commercial vegetable, vegetable … The leaves are oval in shape, 10-14 cm long, the base of the leaves is slightly concave, the edges are sparse. The tree grows naturally, most commonly in the northern mountainous provinces such as Thanh Hoa, Hoa Binh, Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Cao Bang, Bac Can, Thai Nguyen. Vietnamese literature has not recorded any research on this plant.

According to Doctor Tinh, the leaves are often used by people as vegetables, processed with food or boiled water to treat a number of diseases including constipation. However, the toxin of the leaves can cause red blood cell breakdown (hemolysis) leading to severe anemia, especially in people with G6PD (Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) deficiency.

“This explains the fact that in a plate of food prepared with Du Mai leaves, some people have hemolysis, some people don’t,” the doctor explained.

The cause of G6PD deficiency is a gene mutation on the X chromosome. Men normally have only one X sex chromosome (XY), while women have two X chromosomes. (XX). Therefore, the disease usually manifests in men. Women need a change in both sex chromosomes to cause G6PD deficiency.

Doctors recommend using leaves as well as some other forest leaves with unknown effects, which are very dangerous, especially for people with G6PD deficiency.

When unfortunately suffering from poisoning with leaves, people need to quickly go to medical facilities for treatment or timely referral. Cases of sage leaf poisoning, hospitalization in severe condition, must apply intensive treatment measures with hope of saving lives such as gastric lavage, mechanical ventilation, dialysis, plasma exchange, and disorder correction. electrolyte,…
