The car exploded while parked near the main square of the city and the House of Culture, where the Melitopol government is working.

On his Telegram account, Boris Rogov, a Russian-appointed official in Melitopol, said clouds of black smoke rose over the city on the morning of May 30. This massive explosion shook the windows and walls of nearby buildings.

A source in the Melitopol city government told Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency that three people were injured in the explosion, among them two volunteers participating in humanitarian aid.

Local authorities in the city now controlled by Russia blamed the incident on Ukrainian “saboteurs”. They say this is “ma terrorist attack aimed at destabilizing the peaceful life of the city.”

According to AFP news agency, Russian forces took control of the city of Melitopol in the Zaporizhzhia region of southern Ukraine in the early days of Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine, but faced fierce resistance from the people.

Some reports suggest that the explosion occurred near the area where the head of the Zaporizhzhia region appointed by Russia, Mr. Yevgeny Balitsky, lives.

Last week, the mayor of Enerhodar (another city in the Zaporizhzhia region) appointed by Russia was injured in an explosion.
