Special avocado prices at the beginning of the season hit a record low
Each kg of 034 avocado is being sold by fruit shops in Ho Chi Minh City for 25,000-40,000 VND, down by nearly half compared to the same period last year and the lowest ever.
Avocado 034 – a specialty avocado in the Central Highlands – once caused a fever with prices up to 200,000 VND per kg at the beginning of the season. However, in the past two years, this type of avocado has dropped sharply, currently several tens of thousands of dong a kg.
Recorded at traditional stores and markets, the price of 034 avocados of 2-3 types per kilogram has an average retail price of 25,000-40,000 VND, down 45% over the same period last year.
According to Ms. Hang, the owner of a fruit shop on Le Duc Tho Street, Go Vap District (HCMC), the price of 034 avocados is dropping to its lowest level ever. The supply is also quite abundant, not as scarce as every year.

Ms. Hanh, a trader who buys avocados in Lam Dong, said that the bucket price of 034 avocados at the garden is only 8,000-15,000 VND per kilogram (depending on size), down 50% compared to the same period last year.
The price of avocado dropped sharply, according to her, due to the sudden increase in supply compared to the same period in previous years, while consumption in the market decreased.
Previously, 034 avocados were only grown in Lam Dong, now they are present in most of the Central Highlands provinces with an area of up to several tens of thousands of hectares. In the past two years, this avocado’s price has dropped sharply, causing the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Dak Lak and Lam Dong to continuously plan to call on businesses to support output consumption for farmers. However, the purchasing power of this agricultural product in the domestic market is weak, so the price is plunging.
In addition, the Chinese market’s tight control of Covid-19 makes it difficult for this agricultural product to export, making the 034 avocado price drop even more.
According to locals in the Central Highlands provinces, this year’s avocado collection is not as busy as in previous years. Many households that grow this type of avocado give poor quality fruit and risk losses because traders do not buy it.
