121 dengue fever outbreaks, 10 hand foot and mouth disease outbreaks in HCMC

Only in week 21 (from May 20, 2022 to May 26, 2022), the city recorded 1,402 dengue cases, an increase of 457 cases (48.4%) compared to the average of 4 weeks ago.

In week 21, the whole city recorded 121 new dengue outbreaks in 71 wards and communes in 15/22 districts, Thu Duc city. The number of outbreaks in week 21 increased by 42 new outbreaks compared to week 20. The cumulative number of outbreaks by week 21 in 2022 is 567 outbreaks.

In addition, HFMD in children is also increasing rapidly, in the first 5 months of 2022, the city recorded 3,699 cases of the disease, including 96% of children under 5 years old. In week 21, the city recorded an additional 1,070 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, an increase of 481 cases (81.7%) compared to the average of the previous 4 weeks. The number of cases increased in both inpatients and outpatients.

In week 21, the whole city recorded 10 new TCM outbreaks in 5 districts (District 3, District 7, District 12, Binh Chanh, Binh Tan). Since the beginning of the year, the city has recorded 40 outbreaks of TCM throughout the area.

Families and schools need to strengthen measures to protect children against both dengue and HFMD

Faced with the above situation, the city’s health sector called on the community to strengthen measures to prevent dengue and HFMD. To prevent hand, foot and mouth disease for children, parents and caregivers need to strengthen regular hand hygiene with soap under clean running water, periodically clean and disinfect toys, places where children play, and not allow children to get sick. Children eat together, make sure their food and water are cooked. When a child shows signs of illness, it is necessary to stay home from school, go to the hospital for examination and treatment until the illness is completely cured, before returning to school.

Both dengue and HFMD currently have no preventive vaccine and no specific treatment. However, if thoroughly implemented preventive measures will minimize the risk of infection for the community.
