After winning at Cannes, Song Kang-ho was greeted like a hero

Song Kang-ho arrived at Incheon International Airport in Incheon on Monday (local time) with “Broker” director Hirokazu Kore-eda and co-stars. Here, some 300 fans and journalists are celebrating his historic honor.

Song accepted the Best Actor award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in France on Saturday (France time) for his performance in the Korean drama “Broker”. The film was written and directed by Japanese director Kore-eda.

This is Song’s first award at Cannes, although he has starred in several Cannes-winning films, including Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” (2019) and Park Chan-wook’s “Thirst” (2009). He was also a member of the jury at Cannes last year.

With the victory just received, Song Kang-ho is the first Korean actor to win the acting award at Cannes and becomes the third Asian actor to receive this award after Hong Kong actor Tony Leung () 2000 film “In The Mood for Love” and Japan’s Yuya Yagira (“Nobody Knows” 2004).

Director Kore-eda won the 2018 Cannes Palme d’Or for his family film “Shoplifters”. This return to Cannes, he also received the appreciation of Korean fans for his first Korean-speaking project. “Broker” is his second film to bring the main actor the Best Actor award at Cannes after “Nobody Knows”.
