Battle of Donbass: Russia attacks heavily, Ukrainians do not flinch because they have this ‘secret weapon’

According to CBS News, Russia has ramped up its assault on Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, with artillery while infantry has increasingly captured small villages across the Donbass region.

CBS News reporter Imtiaz Tyab reports that Russian forces are entering village by village in an attempt to conquer the entire Donbass.

Kharkiv – Ukraine’s second largest city, although already under Kiev’s control, battles are still raging throughout the region, reporter Tyab said. Ukrainian troops believed to be deployed to defend Kharkiv outnumber Russian troops seven times.

As Russia waged a war of attrition, Ukraine’s military remained undaunted. They have the support of the people as their most powerful secret weapon.

CBS News visited a facility in the town of Kryvyi Rih, in south-central Ukraine, where women are working hard to sew armor for soldiers on the front lines.

Kryvyi Deputy Mayor Rih Serheii Miliutin told CBS News that the people who work here “all have relatives who are serving in the military. So we carefully make everything so that they are of high quality. possible”.

The CBS News team continued to visit a nearby volunteer facility. Local volunteer Oleg Zaboyak led a group of reporters around the facility, where he and others were “turning” old household plastic into camouflage for Ukrainian snipers.

Some of the most important work in the Ukrainian military resistance effort is being done in such volunteer centers around the country. Correspondent Tyab watches as women weave camouflage nets together to protect vehicles and Ukrainian troops on the battlefield.

Volunteer Valentyna Kryvda said she and others are doing whatever they can to help troops on the front lines. For her, that means “working here for three months without a day off. Because we need to do this”.

Despite suffering heavy losses in the Donbass, Ukrainian forces are still counter-attacking further south. They claim to have repelled Russian troops near three villages around the large Russian-controlled city of Kherson over the weekend.
