Tom Cruise’s Maverick Brings Hope to Action Movies

Top Gun 2 kicked off with a whopping $51.8 million on Friday, including $19.3 million for a preview preview in theaters in more than 4,700 theaters in North America.

In the international market, Top Gun: Maverick is having equally impressive sales, even though it’s not showing in China or Russia. The film has grossed $124 million from 62 markets for an initial global cume of $248 million through Sunday.

The film marks Tom Cruise’s highest-ever opening weekend in 32 markets, led by the UK ($19.4 million) and followed by France ($11.7 million) and Australia. (10.7 million USD). Top Gun: Maverick “landing” in Korea next month.

The film, currently rated 97% by excellent critics on Rotten Tomatoes, stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, and Ed Harris. While Val Kilmer also makes a brief appearance as Iceman, Maveric’s arch-nemesis, who later becomes friends. The movie uses the ballad song Hold My Hand by Lady Gaga.
