There are many causes of urethritis in men. In which, there are 3 main causes: gonorrhea urethritis, non-gonococcal urethritis, and non-specific urethritis.

Gonorrhea urethritis: gonococcal urethritis is a symptom of gonorrhea. A sexually transmitted infection (STI), caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Men diagnosed with gonorrhea may experience painful urination and a milky discharge from the penis. In addition, men may also experience testicular pain due to epididymitis.

Non-gonococcal urethritis: Non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) is caused by pathogens other than gonorrhea. Pathogens of non-gonococcal urethritis are mainly microorganisms or bacteria that can cause the disease. The most common pathogens that cause non-gonococcal urethritis include adenovirus, chlamydia, cytomegalovirus escherichia coli, group B streptococcus, and herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Nonspecific urethritis: Non-specific urethritis (NSU) occurs not due to infection but has many other unknown causes. In some cases, nonspecific urethritis can be caused by minor trauma, vigorous sex, or masturbation.

In addition to the above causes, urethritis in men also occurs due to chronic prostatitis, prostatitis, interstitial cystitis, bladder infection, kidney stones, reactive arthritis, urinary tract infections from the bladder or kidneys, dehydration

In men, urethritis, if not treated promptly, can increase the risk of HIV infection or transmission due to viral shedding during urethritis. Experts recommend that men when having sex make sure to use condoms correctly and safely to reduce the risk of urethritis. For people with urethritis, do not have sex until the inflammation completely recovers.
