In the 31st SEA Games final on May 22, Vietnam defeated Thailand with the only goal of Nham Manh Dung to protect the gold medal. Just over 10 days later, the two teams will reunite in the opening match of Group C of the AFC U23 Championship 2022, with major changes in personnel as well as the composition of the coaching staff. Leading Vietnam is coach Gong Oh-kyun, and on the Thai side is Worrawoot Srimaka.

“Compared to the last SEA Games final, Thailand has changed many players. So has Vietnam. Basically, we have put behind the success of SEA Games 31 to focus on the upcoming match.” Coach Gong said. “Thai players are inherently good technical and capable. Their individuals are all quality. In this tournament, Thailand has a different coach compared to SEA Games 31. They have a new way of playing, so we have to analyze them. thoroughly”.

The success of Vietnamese football in recent years is associated with coach Park Hang-seo. Therefore, coach Gong admits to being under considerable pressure when sitting in the “hot seat” in the U23 team, but is confident that he will overcome it.

Previously, Vietnamese teams were trained to meet Coach Park’s forte 3-5-2 scheme. However, over time, this style of play is somewhat caught, especially when meeting opponents who deliberately play defensively. Therefore, Coach Gong is aiming for changes in the scheme as well as the approach to the match of U23 Vietnam. He said: “I learned a lot from Coach Park and his tactics, to find the right plan for Vietnam U23s. Overall, the players have adapted well to the changes despite the lack of preparation time. I am pleased that they follow the instructions of the coaching staff. I also participate in the training process to help the players adapt more quickly to new problems.”

U23 Asia is a special tournament for Vietnamese fans. At this tournament in 2018, the team under the guidance of Coach Park made a miracle of winning a silver medal, marking a brilliant period of Vietnamese football. Although the current generation does not have as many stars as five years ago, Coach Gong believes that Vietnam can still create another buzz in Uzbekistan this time. He said: “Vietnam U23 made an impression in 2018. Hopefully, we will also get good results. Compared to the seniors, this group of players has not played much. But I confirm these are the ones. quality players. They will continue to develop and go far. I will create the best conditions for them.”
