A year ago, Rachel Dorricott and her husband would have at least one dinner or movie out in a week. Now, all of that has to stop.
Due to the rising cost of living, the Dorricotts, who now live in Kingston upon Thames, South West London, have been forced to cut back on food and beverage costs.
Rachel (26 years old) is a writer working in Acton and takes the bus and then the subway to get to work, which takes about 45 minutes. Now, with prices climbing and spending tightening, she takes two bus trips to save money, taking nearly two hours to get to work.
Rachel said: “We had to balance our spending to make sure we paid for everything. I’m planning this summer to go fanless, have dinner with frozen ingredients, get up early for cheaper transportation“.

I sometimes feel embarrassed to haggle but think it saved me £1,500 a year, just from making a few changes.“.

Kirsty Devine (36 years old) and husband Darren (41 years old) have made small changes to their lifestyle to save money. The Halifax couple with son Jack (14) suffered an economic downturn when Darren was laid off in December, while the monthly bill increased by £150 (4.3 million).
Self-employed Kirsty runs the home decor shop simpledivinethings.co.uk says: “I knew I had to do something to get my finances under control. Immediately, we cut out the essentials like eating out.”
She also reduced the heating temperature by 1 degree Celsius and bought a shower timer from Amazon to save on electricity bills. Kirsty said: “Those two simple changes have resulted in a £25-a-month reduction in electricity bills. We’re hoping the same goes for water bills.”.
She added: “Instead of driving to work, I walk. That saves me £1 (29k) a day on fuel. I am much happier since making these changes and feel like a better person in control of my finances“.
