EU sanctions are completely based on “anti-Russian sentiment”

“These sanctions are aimed squarely at the people Russia. Even if the US and Europe issued a statement saying that “we only punish your leaders, we love you – ordinary citizens”, this is completely meaningless”, Mr. Medvedev stated in a message posted on Telegram.

Dmitry Medvedev said that the decision to freeze Russian assets abroad, ban oil imports, ban flights and many other measures will make the lives of Russian people worse, making the country’s economy worse. This is degraded.

“At the heart of such decisions is hatred for Russia, for our people and for our culture,” Dmitry Medvedev said.

The statement of the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council came in the context that the European Union has just announced the imposition of a new round of sanctions against Russia related to its military campaign in Ukraine.

Accordingly, the EU has agreed to impose an embargo on most of Russia’s oil imports into the bloc. The embargo would include a ban on oil shipped by sea but a partial exemption from pipeline shipping, a move crucial to gaining approval from landlocked Hungary. The new sanctions package also includes an asset freeze and travel ban for many individuals, removing the largest Russian bank – Sberbank from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT). Russia’s three major state television stations will also be banned from operating in the EU.
