Former Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung is preparing to appear in court again

The appellate trial panel is chaired by Judge Nguyen Van Son, Chief of the Economic Court, the High People’s Court in Hanoi. The trial is expected to last three days.

Previously, the Hanoi People’s Court sentenced Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung to 8 years in prison for abusing his position and power while on official duty.

Mr. Chung’s accomplices, Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang (former Director of Arktic Trading Service Company Limited – Arktic Company) and Vo Tien Hung (former General Director of Hanoi Sewerage Company Limited – Hanoi Sewerage Company) received a sentence of 4 years, 6 months in prison and 4 years in prison, respectively.

Regarding civil liability, the trial panel forced the defendants to be jointly responsible for compensating the civil plaintiff, the Hanoi Sewerage Company, an amount of more than 36 billion VND.

In which, defendant Nguyen Duc Chung has to pay VND 25 billion, defendant Vo Tien Hung has to pay VND 4 billion and Nguyen Truong Giang has to pay more than VND 7 billion.

After receiving the sentence, Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung appealed against him. In the application, the former Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee stated that, with details of the appeal, the defendant and defense lawyers will provide additional information to the Court of Appeal in the process of bringing the case to appellate trial.

In addition to Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung, defendants Nguyen Truong Giang and Vo Tien Hung both appealed that the sentence imposed by the first-instance court was too heavy. Both defendants asked the court to reduce their sentences.

In addition, defendant Hung appealed that the amount that the first-instance court ordered the defendant to compensate was too much. Mr. Hung asked the High People’s Court in Hanoi to consider reducing the compensation for the accused.

However, after that, defendant Hung withdrew his entire appeal, so the appeals panel of the High People’s Court in Hanoi suspended the trial against the former General Director of Hanoi Sewerage One Member Limited Liability Company.
