BA Ria Vung TauHaving accumulated 400 million dong, Mr. Truong Van Hau borrowed from friends and relatives to grow melons until the third crop was successful.

In the morning of the end of May, Truong Van Hau, 29 years old, in Phu My town drove a truck carrying three tons of yellow melons to Ho Chi Minh City to remove termites. At midday, when the sun was hot, Hau and his workers entered the greenhouse (closed structure to protect the plants) to check the bag of medium (the material that holds water for the plants to grow), observe the ripening cantaloupe, then open the system. drip irrigation system.

“These melons will be cut in 10 days, but with the erratic rainy weather like now, if the whole garden is damaged by mistake, it will cost 100 million dong,” Hau said.

Born in Hai Phong, at the age of 18, Hau followed his parents to Ba Ria – Vung Tau to settle down. Initially, the young man applied for a job as an operator at a conveyor belt company, learned more about welder, and became a main worker.

In early 2015, Hau went to Japan to export labor, with an income of 25-30 million VND per month. When the labor contract remained for two months, and there was a conflict at work, he left the country and then tried to return to Japan but failed.

After a period of unemployment, in 2018, the young man spent 400 million VND in savings, borrowed 400 million VND from his uncle, went to Long Tan commune to rent land to build two greenhouses and grow melons. However, due to lack of technical knowledge, the Hau melons planted in natural soil were weak, and pests died in half of the garden. Along with the difficult output, he considered leaving the garden, applying for a local Japanese company to work as a welder.

New job with low salary, difficult to pay nearly half a billion dong borrowed to grow melon before, Hau quit his job, borrowed an acquaintance to upgrade the technical system, greenhouse continued to grow melons. The second time working in agriculture, adding some experience, but Hau still has not achieved success. Hundreds of millions of loans are at risk of losing money.

After nearly a year of painstaking work, Hau’s melon cultivation only yielded initial results. Since 2019, the melons have been continuously growing, but in the face of price pressure, he rented a car to bring melons to the North and to the West to sell. After only a few crops, he paid off all his debts, rented more land to expand his planting area, and bought a large truck to carry melons to sell.

According to his calculations, a greenhouse of 1,000 m2 per crop, if favorable, will reach an output of 3-4 tons, bringing in a revenue of 100-120 million VND. With 7 greenhouses, each year growing four crops, After-profit is nearly one billion dong after deducting all costs.

Seeing that the model was effective, people in the commune came to learn. At the end of last year, he established Long Tan Melon Cooperative, providing technical assistance in planting, tending, and consuming all melons for cooperative members.
