Philippines accuses Chinese ship of harassment in South China Sea

The Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines said yesterday that it has summoned a senior official from the Embassy China in Manila in mid-April to protest the Chinese coast guard’s harassment of the Philippine ship RV Legend “conducting scientific research” in the South China Sea, according to AFP.

Last week, the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) organization of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS, USA) said that the RV Legend was damaged. Also according to AFP, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs on May 31 said it had objected fishing ban of China in the East Sea from May 1 to August 16. On April 29, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed that part of China’s fishing ban violates Vietnam’s sovereignty over the sea. Hoang Sa islands and asked China to respect Vietnam’s sovereignty over these islands.
