Russian gas exports fall by nearly 28%

Gazprom said that Russia’s gas exports to countries outside the former Soviet Union fell by more than a quarter compared with the same period last year.

Russian state-owned oil company Gazprom announced today that Russia’s gas exports to countries outside the former Soviet Union in the first five months of 2022 will reach 61 billion cubic meters, down 27.6 percent year-on-year. This reduction is attributed to Russia losing some gas importers in Europe.

Gazprom also said gas exports to China through the Siberian Energy pipeline were increasing, but did not provide detailed figures.

Since Russia launched a special military operation on February 24 to “demilitarize and de-fascist Ukraine”, Moscow has asked “the nations not friendly” gas payments in rubles.

Then, Gazprom offered the customer a solution. The Russian gas importer can pay in euros or USD through an account at Gazprombank. This money will then be converted into rubles to transfer to a second account to pay Russia. However, many European companies have refused to follow suit.

On May 31, Gazprom announced stop selling gas to two German and Danish energy companies for refusing to pay in rubles. Before that, Gazprom also stopped supplying gas to Poland, Bulgaria, Finland and the Netherlands.

The European Union (EU) countries have tried to reduce their dependence on Russian energy, but are divided when discussing the imposition of a gas embargo because many members of the bloc are deeply dependent on supplies from Moscow.
