Ambitious project of a giant statue
Back in 1990, Indonesian artist and sculptor, Nyoman Nuarta, came up with a blueprint for a truly ambitious project. It was to build a statue of the Hindu god Vishnu riding on an eagle, Garuda.

Mr. Nyoman wanted to build a giant statue in the south of Bali – known as the island of the gods.
According to Indonesian legend, the eagle Garuda agreed to let Vishnu ride on his body in exchange for elixir to save his mother who was enslaved. After that, Garuda became a loyal animal always beside Vishnu. This statue depicts that image.
Mr. Nyoman’s project quickly gained the support of a few influential people at the time, but still faced many objections from the people.
In 1997, the statue officially started construction. However, the subsequent financial crises brought construction work to a halt.

Giant statue nearly 3 decades to complete
It was not until September 2018 that the complete statue was finally inaugurated. Total time was 28 years from start to finish, at a cost of about $100 million.
After its inauguration, Garuda Wisnu Kencana became the tallest statue in Indonesia and the tallest statue of a Hindu god in the world. And if the giant base is included, the total height of 121m makes it the 4th tallest statue in the world.
In addition to its impressive height, the statue also has a considerable width. The wingspan of the Garuda bird is up to 64 meters long.

The statue’s body alone (excluding the base) is 75 meters high, nearly 30 meters taller than the Statue of Liberty. It symbolizes Vishnu, one of the Hindu gods, riding on the back of his faithful eagle Garuda – a bird-like creature that promised to serve Vishnu after the deity released his mother. Garuda from slavery.
The entire structure is built from 754 parts joined together to form a colossal statue weighing more than 3,000 tons, with a steel frame covered in a bronze and brass skin. On top of Vishnu’s head is a 3.5-ton crown inlaid with gold.
