The person who spends his life in a wheelchair, who receives a long sentence for swearing

On June 1, the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City opened a first-instance trial against defendant Bui Thoi (62 years old, native of Binh Thuan) on the charge of “murder”.

According to the prosecution, around 10 pm on March 23, 2019, Thoi drove a motorbike to an inn in hamlet 6 (Xuan Thoi Son commune, Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City) to find his son, Bui Quoc Tinh. Here, Thoi meets a group of Thai Thanh Tam, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep, Le Thanh Toan and Le Hoang Tan who are drinking beer.

Having acquaintances, Thoi and Tan talked to each other. While talking, due to Cui constantly swearing, Diep and Toan had reminders that led to an argument. Cui left the car to walk to his room, but Diep and Toan still chased the challenge.

When he returned to his room, he met his son. Cui asked Tinh to drive him back to get his car. Before he left, he brought a knife.
As soon as they saw Thoi, Tam’s group continued to curse and then attacked Thoi. Tam, Diep, Toan hit the head with a beer bottle, making Thoi angry, pulling out a knife from his pocket and stabbing Tam through his back.

After committing the crime, the province drove his father to his room.

As for the victim, Tam, due to being taken to the emergency room in time, fortunately escaped death, but the injury rate was up to 97%. Thoi’s stab wound caused the victim to suffer spinal cord injuries, paralyzed both legs, and was confined to a wheelchair.

For victim Thai Thanh Tam used a beer bottle to injure the defendant, but the defendant had a request not to criminally handle it, so the Ho Chi Minh City Police did not handle it.

On May 18, 2021, Thoi made an application not to request criminal handling against Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep, so the CQD issued a decision to suspend the case and stop the investigation of Diep. For Le Thanh Toan, who is currently on the run, the police have issued a wanted decision. When caught, they will be handled later.

At the trial, the defendant confessed to the offence. The defendant said that because Tam and his friends abused and assaulted him first, he couldn’t help but commit the crime.

The defendant had a good character and committed the crime for the first time, so after deliberation, the jury decided to sentence defendant Bui Thoi to 12 years in prison. Forced compensation to the victim 530 million dong.
