According to the Top500 rankings updated on May 30, the Frontier supercomputer built by the US Department of Energy dethroned the Fugaku system at Japan’s Riken Computational Science Center after two years to become a supercomputer. strongest in the world.

In the benchmark test, Frontier scored 1,102 exaflops, or 1.102 trillion operations per second, making it the world’s first supercomputer to hit the exaflop performance threshold. In theory, it can even achieve a maximum performance of 2 billion billion calculations per second, 10 times more powerful than the Summit computer system that held the previous world’s most powerful record, also developed by the US Department of Energy. and located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Frontier is based on the Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) CrayEX platform, which houses a 2GHz AMD EPYC 64C processor along with an AMD Instinct 250X professional GPU. According to PC Mag, this supercomputer has more than 9,400 CPUs and 37,000 GPUs housed in 74 component cabinets, each weighing more than 3,600 kg. The system also features 700 petabytes of memory with HPE’s Slingshot high-performance ethernet network for data transfer.

To ensure that the supercomputer does not overheat, approximately 6,000 gallons (22,712 liters) of cooling water will be pumped through the components cabinets every minute by four pumps.

“Frontier is ushering in a new era in exaflop computing to address the world’s greatest scientific challenges,” said Thomas Zacharia, director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
