The Eskimo are the indigenous peoples who have traditionally inhabited the northern polar region from Eastern Siberia (Russia) through Alaska (USA), Canada and Greenland. The two main peoples known as “Eskimo” are: the Inuit of Canada, northern Alaska (subgroup “Inupiat”) and Greenland, and the Yupik of eastern Siberia and Alaska. A third northern group, the Aleutians, are closely related to the Eskimo. They share a relatively recent common ancestor (“Paleo-Eskimo”) and a language group (Eskimo-Aleut). Alaskans also use the term Alaska Native, which includes all Eskimos, Aleuts, and Alaskan Native Americans. It does not apply to Inuit or Yupik originating outside the state.
