Johnny Depp: ‘The court gave me my life back’

On June 1 (local time), the lawsuit between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard closed after more than six weeks, win amateurish Pirates of the Caribbean. Heard was fined $15 million (including $10 million in punitive damages and $5 million in punitive damages). She only had to pay her ex-husband 10.35 million USD, because Virginia state law stipulates the maximum amount for punitive compensation is 350,000 USD.

“Six years ago, my life, the lives of my children, the lives of the people closest to me, the people who always supported and believed in me, was forever changed.

All in the blink of an eye.

The false, serious and criminal charges made against me through the media have created a lot of negative content, although no charges have been made against me. It circumnavigated the world twice in a nanosecond, causing an earthquake in my life and career.

And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I’m really grateful.

The decision to pursue the case was made only after careful thought, knowing well the legal hurdles I faced and the inevitable scenes in life.

From the very beginning, my goal was to reveal the truth, whatever the outcome. Speaking the truth is something I owe to my children and those who have consistently supported me. I’m relieved to know that I’ve finally accomplished that.

I have been and am overwhelmed by the immense love, support and kindness of people from all over the world. Hopefully my act of coming to the truth will help others, men or women, who see themselves in my situation and who are supporting them, never give up. I hope everything goes back to where it was, before I was found guilty, both in court and in the media.

I would like to acknowledge the great work of the judge, jury, court staff and sheriff, who sacrificed their time to achieve this result. And my diligent and steadfast legal team, who have worked so hard to help me share the truth.

The best has come and a new chapter begins.

The truth is never lost.”

Two years ago, Johnny Depp lose the case to sue Company News Group Newspapers and newspapers The Sun The crime of defamation after the article was posted in 2018. The content revolves around the domestic violence scandal between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard. In it, Depp was called a “wife beater”. At that time, the judge assessed that 12 of the 14 incidents Depp was accused of assaulting Heard had occurred. They concluded the words of The Sun “basically true”.

The noise with Heard since the divorce in 2016 caused Depp damage in both reputation and money. The actor lost his role in Pirates of the Caribbean, The series has grossed over $4.5 billion at the box office. His films were ostracized by the audience. Many firms hesitate to choose him in large projects because of the high risk.

Toward Amber Heard, the court’s decision is considered a step backwards. She stated:

“My disappointment with today’s ruling cannot be put into words.

I am even more disappointed in what this ruling means to other women. That is a step backwards. It goes back to a time when a woman who spoke up could be publicly humiliated. It pushes back against the notion that violence against women should be taken seriously.

I believe Depp’s lawyers succeeded in getting the jury to ignore the pivotal issue of Freedom of Expression and to ignore the compelling evidence that I won the case in the UK.

I’m so sad I lost this case. But what’s sadder is that I seem to have lost my right as an American citizen – to speak freely and openly.”
