According to Reuters news agency, a seven-member jury in Virginia, USA, also ruled for Heard on a counterclaim against Depp.
At the heart of this six-week lawsuit is a December 2018 article by Heard in the Washington Post.
The article did not mention Depp by name, but his attorney told jurors that Heard was apparently referring to him.
In their June 1 ruling, the jury agreed with all of the defamation charges brought by Depp, citing a passage in the article that read: “I have spoken out against sexual violence – and face the outrage of our culture. That has to change.”
The jurors rejected two of Heard’s three counterclaims. However, they concluded she had been defamed when an attorney for Depp told a media outlet that Heard had staged property damage to report to police after an altercation.
The jury ordered Heard to pay Depp $15 million. The judge reduced the fine to $10.35 million to comply with state limits on compensatory damages.
The jury also ordered Depp to pay Heard $2 million in damages. The Pirates of the Caribbean star described the decision as a vindication, and his ex-wife said it was “a disappointment”.
Depp, 58, sued Heard for $50 million, alleging that she defamed him by calling herself a “representative of domestic abuse” in a Washington Post article. Heard counter-sued the former ferret for $100 million, saying Depp smeared her when his attorney called her accusations a “hoax.”
Depp denied hitting Heard or any of the women and said she was the one who became violent in their relationship. He told jurors that the charges from Heard cost him “everything”.
Following the ruling from the UK, Depp then released his latest statement. “The jury gave me my life back. I am truly grateful,” he wrote.
“The best is yet to come and a new chapter has finally begun. Veritas numquam perit. The truth never dies,” Depp concluded his statement.
Sitting in the courtroom, Heard kept looking down as the verdicts were read.
“The disappointment I feel today cannot be put into words. I am heartbroken that the mountain of evidence is still not enough against the power, influence and influence of my ex-husband,” Heard later stated.
“I’m even more disappointed with what this ruling means for other women. It’s a step backwards,” added the Aquaman actress.
