Preventing children from drowning: Teaching children to swim in a homemade “swimming pool”

For the past 10 years, every summer, people have seen teacher Nguyen Viet Tuoc (Hai Vinh Primary and Secondary School, Hai Hung Commune, Hai Lang District, Quang Tri) blocking the local N1 irrigation canal to teach swimming for free. for children.

As a son of Hai Lang – a low-lying, flood-prone district of the locality, Mr. Tuoc and the people here are always worried about children drowning. Master Tuoc has witnessed many sad deaths due to rivers, the victims are mainly students.

In order to limit the tearful cries caused by drowning, in 2012, Mr. Tuoc decided to open a free swimming class for students. Without a swimming pool, Mr. Tuoc had to use bamboo slats across the irrigation canal, turning this place into a “swimming pool”.

The first free swimming class of the village teacher had 100 children enrolled and most of them knew how to swim after that. In the following years, the number of students registered to study increased gradually, each year about 170 students.

Tuoc said, not only teaching swimming skills, but also teaching children basic knowledge about drowning prevention, rescue and rescue.

To date, Mr. Tuoc has taught about 1,500 children to swim and understand some drowning prevention skills. In May 2021, Mr. Tuoc was honored to be awarded a certificate of merit by the Ministry of Education and Training for his outstanding achievements in implementing drowning prevention and control for children and students in the school.

In addition to special individuals like Mr. Tuoc, a few years ago, some organizations, especially the youth union, also blocked canals, rivers and streams to teach children how to swim.

In the highland communes of Vinh Linh district (Quang Tri), Vinh Ha Youth Union is the first unit to teach children swimming free of charge. Without a swimming pool, the commune youth union had to find a fairly flat stream. Then, they used bamboo and many plastic cans to combine into rectangular boxes, with a total area of about 100m2, forming a “swimming pool”.

During the summer of this year (2021), Vinh Ha Commune Union taught 40 young children how to swim.

Not only Vinh Ha, communes in many other localities also set up “swimming pools”, teaching children to swim by the above method.

Drowning prevention for children: Top solutions, countless difficulties

Confiding with us, Mr. Tuoc said that teaching swimming in irrigation canals is difficult to manage, dangerous and risky for both teachers and students.

“Many people say that when I teach swimming like that, I eat bran and pay gold. It’s true, I teach swimming without salary, bran can’t eat, but if something goes wrong, I have to pay gold and take responsibility” – Mr. Tuoc talk.

There is no swimming pool, parents in Vo Xa village, Trung Son commune, Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province have to take their children to the Ben Hai river to practice swimming, but the effect is not high.

According to Tuoc, blocking canals, ponds, rivers and streams to teach children to swim is only an urgent, temporary, narrow-scope solution. To solve the root problem, it is necessary to build swimming pools and teach swimming right in schools.

Having a swimming pool in schools will be more convenient in teaching swimming, mass application, large scale and greater responsibility in each school.

According to Tuoc, after teaching children how to swim at school, the school needs to put students into practice to experience the natural environment in order to improve their skills.

Ms. Tran Thi Thu – Secretary of Quang Tri Provincial Youth Union said that this summer, grassroots unions organized 60 classes to teach children swimming and drowning prevention skills by blocking rivers, streams, canals and canals. . However, teaching swimming in that way faces many difficulties because it depends on natural conditions, weather, etc., when the water is shallow, the teaching stops. These swimming classes cannot be maintained regularly, and their accessibility and effectiveness are not high, because not all children can afford to attend swimming classes.

According to Ms. Thu, the most important thing to prevent children from drowning is to teach them how to swim. To achieve high efficiency, it is necessary to build swimming pools and teach swimming right in schools.

The cost to build a swimming pool is quite large, the school alone cannot afford. Therefore, in addition to the state budget, it is necessary to have a consensus, socialize, and mobilize funds from businesses, benefactors, parents, etc. to do this.

According to teacher Nguyen Viet Tuoc, some parents will think that, contributing money to build a swimming pool, but their children only need to learn in a few weeks, a few months to be able to swim, which is a waste of money. But if you think more carefully, when your children learn to swim, they will be able to protect their lives against rivers for the rest of their lives. Therefore, each parent needs to contribute to the school to build a swimming pool and teach swimming for their children.

Moreover, the swimming pool also has to be maintained, changed water … so maintaining a regular budget is essential.

“In the past, parents always forced their children to spend a lot of time studying culture to be good. But today, after so many drowning cases, they have begun to change their minds and rearrange the time for their children to go to school. swimming. Because learning to swim is both a playground for physical training and protecting your children’s lives. Let your children learn to swim and know how to swim before thinking about becoming a doctor or engineer…” – Mr. Tuoc shared.
