Reasons why you pee a lot

Whether it’s during the day at work or at home at night when you’re already asleep, frequent urination can happen at any time. If you are in this category and have questions about why you are urinating so much, then this article is for you. We’ll explore common causes of frequent urination, how certain medications increase your frequency of urination, and what you can do to limit your nighttime urination.

How many times a day should you pee?

Urine outflow is related to the amount of fluid. On average, six to eight bowel movements are normal. This number can change for people who drink more water – urinating 10 times may be normal for them. It may also be lower for people who don’t consume a lot of fluids.

For those who drink tea or coffee, you may find yourself urinating more often due to the caffeine. Caffeine acts as a diuretic, encouraging your kidneys to remove more water through urine.

It’s also important to note that everyone’s bladder is different. In general, the bladder can hold 1 ½ to 2 cups of urine. The difference in urine output can make you need to go to the bathroom more often.

What causes frequent urination?

Here are some of the more common causes of frequent urination. While some of these are behavioral, you should contact your doctor to determine if an underlying medical problem is to blame.

1. Diabetes: People with diabetes have more glucose in their blood than usual. The body cannot reabsorb this excess sugar, so it becomes waste in your urine. During this process, glucose absorbs more water, ultimately increasing urine output. Then a cycle occurs – the more you pee, the more dehydrated you become, causing you to drink more water.

2. Dietary Triggers: Caffeinated foods (coffee, tea, chocolate) along with spicy foods, certain acidic foods, and foods with artificial sweeteners can all act as bladder stimulants making you urinating more.

3. Enlarged prostate: This golf ball-sized gland can become enlarged and put pressure on the urethra. The pressure disrupts the flow of urine and can cause the bladder to contract even when it’s not full.

4. Hormone production: Most people sleep through the night without needing to use the bathroom due to antidiuretic hormone (ADH), a chemical that restricts the amount of water released by the kidneys to concentrate urine. Lower ADH levels can lead to more urine production and, therefore, more bowel movements.

5. Interstitial Cystitis: This condition is caused by inflammation of the bladder wall, causing the bladder to become tight and unable to hold as much urine.

6. Kidney stones: When kidney stones move to the lower urinary tract near your bladder, they can create pressure that causes you to urinate more often.

7. Drugs: Certain medications can relax the bladder, cause bladder spasms, or lead to the kidneys producing too much fluid, all of which cause frequent urination. Talk to your doctor about any prescription or over-the-counter medications that might make you pee more if you visit for advice.

8. Overactive bladder: As the name suggests, the bladder contracts even when it is not full. This causes you to empty your bladder more often than usual.

9. Pregnancy: Between excess fluid and the position of the fetus on the bladder, women often use the bathroom more during pregnancy. These trips may be more frequent during the first and third trimesters – during the second trimester, the position of the uterus puts pressure on the bladder.

10. Stroke: Your bladder relies on both muscles and nerves to hold and discharge urine. After a stroke, the neurotransmitters that tell the bladder when to empty may be damaged.

11. Urinary tract infection (UTI): This type of infection can affect the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Inflammation from a UTI causes swelling and inflammation of the tissues of the urinary tract.

In addition to frequent urination, people can also develop polyuria, a condition in which you produce too much urine (more than 3,000 mL a day or about 13 cups). Polyuria occurs when the kidneys filter too much water, either from increased volume (alcohol or excess water intake) or a medical condition such as diabetes.
