Sheryl Sandberg leaves Facebook – VnExpress Digital

Sheryl Sandberg, longtime COO of Meta – the parent company of Facebook, decided to step down because “it’s time for me to write the next chapter of my life”.

Meta’s chief operating officer announced on Facebook this morning that she will leave the company in the fall after 14 years. The decision comes at a time when Meta is facing a series of questions about how to handle less transparent information of social networks and its strategy to switch to social media. metaverse.

Sandberg, 52 years old, said he will continue to serve on the board of directors. She once said joining Facebook was “an honor and privilege of a lifetime” and initially intended to stay at the company for about five years instead of continuing to the present.

Sandberg explained that her job leaves her with little time for other pursuits and that she now wants to focus on her personal philanthropy and Lean In foundation. She is also getting married this summer to Tom Bernthal, a television producer.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, appoints Javier Olivan, a longtime product manager, as Meta’s next COO. Olivan has overseen much of Facebook’s growth over the past decade and is managing WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook.

Sandberg chose to end her job at Meta at a time when the company was in trouble, a far cry from the peak she enjoyed a decade ago. As a key leader alongside Zuckerberg, she helped build the social network’s business in its early years.

“When Sheryl joined in 2008, I was 23 years old and knew almost nothing about running a company,” Zuckerberg said in his latest Facebook post. “We created a great product – the Facebook page – but the business was not yet profitable and struggled to transform from a small startup into a real organization.” Working with Zuckerberg, Sandberg helped increase Facebook’s revenue from $150 million in 2007 to more than $3.7 billion in 2011.

However, after the 2016 US presidential election, Facebook came under intense scrutiny because the platform was used to sow division and spread misinformation. Sandberg was responsible for policy and information security at the company during that election. This social network then continued to be involved in the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which leaked the data of tens of millions of users, causing Zuckerberg to testify before the US Congress.

Follow New York Times, Sandberg was unable to recover from those falls. Previously, CEO Zuckerberg relied almost entirely on Sandberg to handle policy and operational matters. But over the past few years, he has found himself in the position of “wartime leader“, increasing control of Meta by consolidating power and even making unilateral decisions.

Late last year, Zuckerberg also changed the company’s name from Facebook to Meta, clearly showing his ambition in the metaverse trend. However, while the company spends heavily on virtual universe products, its advertising business has also struggled, in part due to changes in privacy policies by Apple and Google.

Sandberg is a well-known figure in the tech industry. Before joining Facebook, she served as Vice President of Global Online Sales at Google, holding senior roles at the World Bank and the US Department of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton.
