Sony believes that smartphone models will be equipped with a more advanced camera system, increased sensor size and a better image signal processor (ISP). Sony expects the average size of high-end sensors to double by 2024. Not stopping there, Sony predicts that by 2025, smartphones will have a leap in video recording capabilities, more megapixels and better autofocus performance. This includes “evolution” in video performance such as high read rates, 8K video support, multi-frame processing for better HDR, and more powerful AI processing. Sony also believes that by using distance data, perhaps through a ToF or LiDAR sensor, focusing will become easier, faster and more accurate.

By 2030, Sony hopes smartphones will popularize folding optics, while continuing to improve AI processing to produce high-quality photos.
