Ukraine counterattacks to repel Russia’s advance in Severodonetsk

Serhiy Hayday, head of the military junta in the Lugansk region, said that Kremlin forces had made no progress on the night of June 1 in an attempt to take control of Severodonetsk.

According to Serhiy Hayday, Russia has deployed 10,000 troops to capture this strategic city. But the Ukrainian army managed to lure the enemy out of some routes. “They don’t control the whole city, the fighting is going on.”

Earlier on June 1, this official said that Russia controlled 80% of the city of Severodonetsk.

Severodonetsk and neighboring Lysychansk are two of the last major cities in the Lugansk region still under Ukrainian control. Russian forces have besieged Severodonetsk for the past several days, advancing in several directions to push Ukrainian forces out of the city.

The capture of the city would give Russia a symbolic victory as Moscow aims to gain complete control of the Donbass region as its main goal.
