WHO recommends strengthening control of monkeypox

Health Organization world (WHO) has just announced the goal of controlling monkeypox by reducing human-to-human transmission to the maximum extent, according to the WHO European website May 31.

The WHO regional director for Europe, Hans Kluge, said the goal was set, although it was not certain that the epidemic would be completely contained.

According to him, monkey pox which are not among the top-researched infectious diseases group, diagnostic and therapeutic methods are not widely available or difficult to access. Therefore, this expert calls on the world to significantly and urgently reduce the number of people exposed, by promoting communication and community actions, isolating cases during the infection phase, effective monitoring and tracing.

Mr. Kluge said Europe is now the epicenter of the contagion monkey pox outside of areas where the disease is commonly reported, such as Central and West Africa, with a high likelihood of spreading elsewhere during the summer.

CNN quoted expert Rosamund Lewis who leads the WHO’s monkeypox technical team as saying that there have been 550 cases of infection in 30 countries in four of the six WHO regions. She noted that many of the infections were recorded in a relatively short time, and at many places and were never before seen. At present, the source of infection is unknown, while countries should take advantage of the short time to not let the number of cases increase into a large outbreak, she recommended.
