The girl whose heart is in a paradoxical position

When hospitalized for pneumonia, Olesya Kulikova discovered her internal organs were turned upside down.

From the moment she was born, Olesya, who lives in the city of Achinsk, was hospitalized with all sorts of instability problems related to health. Up to now, the 27-year-old girl has experienced severe stomach pain, pneumonia, bronchial asthma…

However, it was not until 2009 that doctors discovered that Olesya’s internal organs were not in the correct position.

Olesya has a rare condition called visceral inversion where vital organs are misplaced. This disease occurs in about one in 10,000 people.

This strange condition is usually detected through X-ray, CT, MRI or ultrasound.

But it was not until the age of 14 that Olesya realized that the heart was located on the right side of the body. Four years later, she was told her liver was on the left side.

In 2019, Olesya was hospitalized with pneumonia. “Every time I go to the doctor, I explain that my heart is on the right side, not the left side like everyone else. When I did the ECG, I had to tell the doctor to put the electrodes on the right side.”

In 2021, Olesya was diagnosed with Kartagener syndrome, a genetic condition that causes abnormalities in the airways, which often occur in patients with inverted viscera.

So, Olesya had pneumonia 4 times, bronchial asthma, shortness of breath and a constant cough.

In April of this year, Olesya was hospitalized with stomach pain, then was told she had kidney stones.

To control and treat the disease, Olesya started going to the gym, hoping to help her lungs function normally. So far, she was breathing easier.

Olesya is the only person in the family with this syndrome. Previously, she had met a woman with a similar disease who was able to give birth to a healthy baby.

Another baby was born with a right heart and was disabled. But she had surgery and now has a healthy heart.

Currently, Olesya is trying to raise awareness about the strange disease. She shared about her condition online and received feedback from many people from different countries.

Visceral inversion is a rare condition in which the organs are in reverse position (eg, the heart is on the right side).

Experts say that the underlying causes are quite complex, possibly caused by a recessive gene, although carrier parents are not affected, but there is a 25% chance of having a child with the disease.
