The Them – American Way of Life (1 Version)

Them—American Way of Life [1ª Versão]

The band OS ELES debuted in 1984 and disbanded in 1988. It was the time of “end of dictatorship”, political transition (or cold war) in Brazil. The song “American Way of Life” has “the flavor of Rio Grande” in its lyrics, using elements like “It’s no use listening to milongas, Tomar chimarrão, Dressing with tradition”. It was one of the band’s most requested songs on Rádio Ipanema at the time. The Eles played shows with Paralamas do Sucesso and RPM. On stage, they put on a mixed theatrical show that caused a stir at times. For example, the interpretation of the song “Prendo e Arrebento”, where the singer wears a military uniform. This happened in a show on the stage of a Clube Militar in Porto Alegre. Apparently the contractors who tried in vain to prevent the Banda from protesting against the military regime. At the Araújo Vianna show on August 9, 1985, the song “CDF” also won its scenic version. “We put a chair in the middle of the stage. There was a fat boy in there, 10 or 12 years old, very scenic and he did it very well,” recalls guitarist Leo Henkin. “He was the brother of a friend of the band, and he sat the whole song, the lyrics of which cursed that typical character that’s common in schools: the CDF, the guy who’s a mixed bag of spies who tell the teachers the Kissing ass and doing the scholarly pose.” There was no such thing as “politically correct,” it was “The Them.” With the end of the band, the members began to devote themselves to other projects. The only one to follow in music was Leo Henkin, now successful in Papas da Língua. Leandro Branchtein (vocals), Darwin Gerzson (bass) and Régis and Dannie Dubin (drums and guitar) chose other paths, such as medicine and advertising.
