LPGA Tour golfer with serious illness still competes for major

AmericaOn June 3, Danielle Kang confirmed that she was carrying a spinal tumor after the second round of the major US Women’s Open held by the US Golf Association (USGA) in Pine Needles, North Carolina.

“I have undergone many treatments to prolong my career and feel happy to attend the major this week,” Kang shared with the US media. In the second round, the 29-year-old golfer often had to exercise to stretch his back. Kang said she still has many tests that can determine whether the tumor is malignant or benign.

Kang’s health problems were revealed when her brother Alex posted a message of encouragement for her on Instagram in round 1. “@daniellekang looks good! Do well at the US Women’s Open this week. I know only you have the guts to compete with a spinal tumor… So determined!”, wrote Alex.

After two rounds on the par71 field, Kang scored +3, just enough to pass the elimination. The top of the group (-9) belongs to Minjee Lee and Mina Harigae. Next to T1, two strokes away is T3 with Choi Hye-Jin, Anna Nordqvist, while T5 (-6) has world number one Ko Jin Young and Swedish amateur Ingrid Lindblad.

The defending champion of the Philippines Yuka Saso did not cross. The US Women’s Open bonus fund this period is at 10 million USD, of which 1.8 million USD goes to the champion. So far, Kang has achieved a series of 13 USGA majors, including the highest in 2018 – fourth place overall.

Kang has been on the LPGA Tour since 2012, having won six championships so far, including the 2017 major Women’s PGA Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club. In that breakthrough victory, Alex played an important part, through the experience gathered from the previous field. He is also a professional golfer.

Kang’s father used to work as a caddy to help her successfully defend the US Women’s Amateur championship in 2011. Two years later, he died of lung and brain cancer.
