Mariah Carey sued and demanded $20 million in damages

According to TMZ, Andy Stone sues Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff (co-author of the song All I Want For Christmas Is You) Copyright infringement. The lawsuit was filed in the Eastern District Court of Louisiana, USA.

In the text, Andy Stone affirms the song All I Want For Christmas Is You His song was recorded in 1989. The song was then widely broadcast and entered the Billboard charts during the Christmas 1993 season.

Mariah Carey debut All I Want For Christmas Is You (same name) in 1994. Andy Stone said that the female singer was not allowed to use this title. Andy Stone demanded at least $20 million in damages.

In an article published by The New York Post, the lawsuit content reads: “Plaintiff personally requested defendant to stop using the name of plaintiff’s work. But the defendant continued to exploit the product All I Want for Christmas is You, reaping many financial benefits, and at the same time causing harm to the plaintiff.“.

Andy Stone believes that Mariah Carey intentionally infringed copyright for profit.

The New York Post and TMZ said they have contacted Mariah Carey’s representatives but have not received a response about the incident.

All I Want for Christmas Is You, Classic song with 28 years old, is considered a “gold mine” of Mariah Carey, helping her earn about $ 2.6 million per year. According to a report by The Economist in 2017, the song All I Want for Christmas Is You has grossed a total of $60 million since its release in 1994.

Mariah Carey once shared on Entertainment Weekly: “When it first came out, the song was popular, but the effect wasn’t as good as it is now. I feel like everyone has grown up with that song. And music becomes an inevitable part of life, especially on holidays. I feel proud because I love Christmas so much“.
