About 10 days before entering the hospital, Mr. L. in Phu Tho had a pig slaughter operation. After about a week, he developed a high fever and a rash all over his body. In the hospital, he had a severe infection, rapid breathing.

On June 3, doctors from the Emergency Department – Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital said that this unit had just received two cases of bacteremia and meningitis caused by swine streptococcus.

The first person is Mr. CTL (44 years old) from Tam Nong, Phu Tho. Mr. L. was hospitalized more than 2 weeks ago due to high fever of 40 degrees Celsius, rash all over the body, severe infection, rapid breathing, rapid pulse.

According to the sharing of the family, about 10 days before entering the hospital, the patient had a pig surgery. After about a week, he developed a high fever and a rash all over his body.

The doctor diagnosed the patient with bacteremia, suspected of being caused by swine streptococcus. The patient was treated with antibiotics, dialysis, and damaged skin care combined with nutrition.

After 4 days, the patient’s fever was gone, the necrotic rash was no longer spreading, and the paraclinical tests showed good results. Currently, the patient’s condition is gradually stable and can be discharged from the hospital in the next few days.

The second case is Mr. NVC (67 years old). Mr. C. was admitted to the Emergency Department with high fever, chills, and confusion.

Test results, lumbar puncture showed that the patient had meningitis caused by swine streptococcus. Currently, the patient has no fever, gradually improved consciousness and can be discharged from the hospital in the next few days.

According to Dr. Nguyen Duc Lich – Emergency Department, swine streptococcus is a bacteria that causes disease in pigs and is at risk of infecting humans when in contact with sick pigs or using products from sick pigs.

People infected with swine streptococcus have diverse clinical manifestations. The course of the disease depends on the pathogen and the response of each organism.

To prevent swine streptococcus, the Ministry of Health recommends:

– Ensure food hygiene and safety, do not eat raw blood pudding, uncooked pork products.

– Do not use pork with unusual red color, such as bleeding or edema.

– Practice good personal hygiene, use gloves and other necessary protective equipment when handling pigs, handling pork, frequently washing hands with soap.

– Do not buy, sell, transport or slaughter sick or dead pigs; destroy diseased and dead pigs according to regulations.

– People who have symptoms of suspected disease such as sudden high fever, headache, dizziness, skin rash… and have a history of raising and slaughtering sick or dead pigs or eating unsafe pig products hygiene, it is necessary to immediately go to a medical facility for timely examination and treatment to avoid life-threatening danger.
