Saudi Arabia will build the world’s two largest buildings in a $500 billion project: Extraordinary!

Follow Bloomberg Reportedly, Saudi Arabia is planning to build the world’s largest building in a sparsely populated area as part of a development project called Neom worth up to 500 billion USD.

Neom is the project of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This project aims to build two skyscrapers about 500 m high and tens of kilometers in length. These two buildings are located in “The Line” (The Line).

Specifically, the two skyscrapers will be a complex of houses, commercial areas and offices stretching from the Red Sea coast to the desert. This project has evolved from the idea announced in 2021 to build a chain of buildings that will connect to the underground bullet train line, forming a continuous construction.

In fact, designers are being asked to build a 0.8-kilometer prototype of these two buildings. Accordingly, once completed, each project will be larger than the largest buildings in the world today. In particular, most of the building’s area is used for factories or shopping centers, not residential areas.

Neom – super ambitious project of Saudi Arabia

Nemo is a very large and ambitious project of Saudi Arabia. The project will be built on the Red Sea coast and focus on industries such as energy, biotechnology and high-end machinery manufacturing.

It is expected that, upon completion, Neom will become an industrial and commercial center, a famous tourist destination. The Neom project is also part of a plan to attract foreign investment, thereby helping to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy, while reducing its dependence on oil exports and making the country a a technology hub like Silicon Valley, incorporating towns, research, education, and tourist attractions.

Neom is envisioned as a smart city applying all advanced technologies, which focuses on all areas of human life such as construction, culture, sports, energy… Especially, An important part of the Neom project is the “Straight City” built in the desert, zero carbon emissions and run on 100% clean energy.

In January 2021, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman first announced plans to build a “Straight City”, a smart city that stretches up to 170 km and can become home to about 1 million people. people. This city is considered to be a revolutionary project that puts people first.

To date, a 3-storey “Straight City” is under construction, including an above-ground area for pedestrians and two underground floors for vehicles and infrastructure.

“Straight City” – Smart City

According to Mr. Nadhmi Al-Nasr, Project Management Manager, “Straight City” is a giant construction.

Stretching from the mountains of northwestern Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea, the “Straight City” will be connected by a variety of super-fast routes and automated mobility solutions. Specifically, schools, restaurants, shops and other destinations are all within a 5-minute walk, and none of the trips take longer than 20 minutes.

According to the project developers, with its straight shape and underground infrastructure, the design of this smart city helps to preserve up to 95% of the natural landscape.

Saudi Arabia will invest 100 to 200 billion USD in “Straight City” and is expected to This project will create 380,000 new jobs and boost the country’s GDP by about $48 billion by 2030.

The “straight city” is the first part of the Neom project, a $500 billion megacity covering up to 25,900 square kilometers in Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk province, close to the border between Jordan and Egypt.

Follow The Wall Street Journalwhen in operation, “Straight City” will use flying taxis for transportation, a Jurassic park-style amusement park with many dinosaur robots, and many of the highest Michelin-starred restaurants in the world .

In particular, the beautiful landscape of the area will also be transformed thanks to the application of a rain machine, the world’s largest coral garden, luminous sand and even a giant artificial moon that lights up at night.

Under the plan, Neom will rely on wind farms, solar power and advanced technology that turns water into oxygen and hydrogen for fuel.

Nadhmi Al-Nasr, CEO of Neom, said in an interview: “The straight city is an idea that was beyond expectations.”

Neom CEO also declined to comment on the specifics of the plan: “What we will present is when we are ready it will be very positively received and will be seen as revolutionary.” .

The buildings will have different heights and adapt to the landscape, the final size is determined after careful consideration of technical and topographical aspects, Mr. Al-Nasr said.

In fact, the Middle East is already home to the tallest building in the world, which is Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. Earlier, Saudi Crown Prince Alwaleed bin Talal also announced plans to build the world’s tallest building near Jeddah. However, this skyscraper is currently only partially completed.

Currently, according to Bloomberg, some of Saudi Arabia’s unexpected revenue from selling higher oil prices may be diverted to Neom construction. Government officials also said that the beneficiary of the surplus fund could be the Public Investment Fund chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed and the owner of Neom.

But so far, funding has not been a challenge for Neom. Instead, the question of the project’s viability was raised after a number of other massive development projects to promote economic diversification in the past failed. The PIF Asset Fund is an example. PIF is currently trying to turn a nearly finished cluster of offices north of Riyadh (which cost billions of dollars to build) into a financial hub.

Therefore, in the hope that a similar fate can be avoided, project participants say, the “Straight City” will be built in phases and based on needs.

Ali Shihabi, a member of Neom’s advisory board, said that when “Straight City” was presented to the board, he saw a sustainable, smart, well-thought-out modern city and will fit from working people to billionaires. The city will be built in phases, based on needs.

The “straight city” is not only an ambition of Saudi Arabia, but also a strategy, the first step to open up a new non-oil growth direction for this country.
