Israeli company Electreon recently announced plans to build the first road capable of wireless charging for electric vehicles in the US. The pilot project is expected to be completed next year in Detroit, Michigan, and it will initially be just one mile (1.6 km) long.
The road will have an underground network of charging coils connected to the grid, but electric vehicles will need additional receivers to charge when driving through them. The system does not generate electricity without a receiver, so people and animals crossing the street will not be electrocuted. The system is also modular in design, since each coil is individually connected to the grid, a failure of a portion of the line will not render the entire system useless.
Charging capacity depends on vehicle type and running speed. Of course, this short test route won’t fully charge the car’s battery, but it will also help increase battery life a bit, allowing the electric vehicle to travel further before it needs to be charged. The receiver is also capable of storing data so that the vehicle owner can pay for electricity later.
An Electreon representative stated that bus routes would be a great place to deploy this charging system as they have a specific and repeatable schedule. Areas with a lot of traffic jams can also work well, as your car will have time to charge while waiting to move.
