US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman visits Vietnam
The visit of the US Deputy Secretary of State comes after the May US-ASEAN Special Summit, President Joe Biden’s visits to Korea and Japan, the Quad Summit in Tokyo, and the US public Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.
The first stop of Ms. Sherman’s trip was South Korea, followed by the Philippines, Laos and Vietnam.
According to the US State Department, during her stay in Hanoi, Ms. Sherman will meet with Vietnamese officials including Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc to highlight the strength of the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership as well as the US support for a strong, prosperous and independent Vietnam.
Sherman will also announce additional US support for unexploded ordnance clearance operations to demonstrate America’s commitment to war aftermath. Sherman will also discuss supply chain resilience with private sector representatives in Vietnam and with Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan to launch the International Development Agency project. United States (USAID) to combat wildlife trafficking in Vietnam.
In addition, during her stay in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Sherman will meet Party Secretary Nguyen Van Nen and give a speech at Fulbright University.
