US warns monkeypox has been spreading silently for a long time

Many cases monkey pox in the United States is caused by a strain that appeared in recent cases in Europe, but some samples belonged to another strain, the AP news agency cited information from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Jennifer McQuiston’s Expert CDC said more analysis is needed from more patients to be able to determine when monkeypox spread in the US and elsewhere.

“I think it’s clear that cases of monkeypox in the US have not been reported before, but to a negligible degree,” McQuisto said. However, the US is experiencing community transmission in some areas of the US but authorities have not yet detected it.

CDC says there have been more than 700 cases of monkeypox worldwide world, including 21 cases in 11 US states. However, the number in the US may be higher after the CDC ramps up screening efforts.

Dr Angela Rasmussen, a virologist from the University of Saskatchewan, said the findings mean this outbreak is likely to be under control. Up to now, the US side has not answered the question regarding when the spread began and where the epidemic is currently occurring.

To date, there have been no deaths in the US or Europe from monkeypox. However, this could change if the virus begins to spread in more susceptible people, like children or people with weakened immune systems, Ms. Rasmussen warned.

The female expert also mentioned another concern: even in the case that the human epidemic is successfully controlled, there is still a possibility that virus will attack the rodent community in this country, including pets or domestic rats.
