111 more dengue fever outbreaks in Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City last week recorded 111 new dengue fever outbreaks in 79 wards and communes, an increase of more than 1,000 cases compared to the previous week.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC), the city recorded more than 1,500 new cases from May 17 to June 2, up more than 28% from the average four weeks ago. Many localities have a high number of cases such as Ward 5 (District 8), Tan Thoi Nhat Ward (District 12), Phuoc Vinh An Commune (Cu Chi District). During the week, the health sector handled chemical spraying for 223 outbreaks; 5 wards and communes handle large-scale outbreaks.

At the end of April, HCDC began to warn about dengue fever in season, the risk of an outbreak following Covid-19. Since then, the number of consecutive cases has increased rapidly every week. Currently, the city is entering the rainy season – the peak of dengue fever.

In the first 5 months of the year, the city recorded more than 11,700 cases of dengue fever, an increase of more than 66% over the same period last year. The number of severe dengue fever cases is 209, an increase of nearly 7 times over the same period in 2021. The number of deaths from this disease since the beginning of the year to date is 7.

Besides dengue fever, the number of cases Hand, foot and mouth also continuously increased in recent weeks. Last week, the city detected 977 cases, an increase of 19.5% compared to the average of the previous month. In which, the number of cases increased in outpatients and decreased in inpatient hospitalizations.

In addition, 21 outbreaks occurred during the week in District 3, District 7, District 11, District 12, Binh Chanh, Binh Tan, Binh Thanh, and Nha Be. In which, ward 12 (Tan Binh district), Vinh Loc A commune (Binh Chanh), and Hiep Binh Phuoc ward (Thu Duc) had a high number of infections.

HCDC recommends that people spend 10-15 minutes a week cleaning the place they work, live, from inside to around the house. Do not allow water to stagnate, causing mosquitoes and mosquitoes such as overturning old unused buckets, jars and bottles; scrubbing and watering flowerpots, water bowls at least once a week, cleaning porches, roofs, gutters…

Seal the jars, lakes, and drums containing water when not in use to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs and spreading mosquitoes. Use sprays, incense, mosquito repellant creams, wear long-sleeved clothes, sleep under a mosquito net even during the day to avoid mosquito bites.

To proactively prevent hand, foot and mouth disease, caregivers and children wash their hands frequently with soap under running water several times a day. Practice good eating and drinking hygiene, cooked food and drink, eating utensils must be washed before use. Regularly clean daily contact surfaces and tools with soap or common cleaning agents.

Do not allow children to come into contact with sick or suspected sick people. When detecting a child showing signs of suspected illness, the child should be taken to the doctor. There is no vaccine for hand, foot and mouth disease. The main source of transmission of hand, foot and mouth disease is from the saliva, blisters and feces of sick children. The disease is common in preschool children because children have a habit of putting their hands in their mouths.
