Meta adds new calling tag to Messenger
Meta has tweaked the new design for the Messenger app with an easier-to-find call button, allowing users to make calls with ease.
Follow Engadgetapplication Messenger of Meta now adds a “Calls” tab dedicated to making voice and video calls to the function bar at the bottom of the app. A new tab will appear with “Chats”, “Stories” and “People”.

It’s a small change, but could be the move to make Messenger more like a WhatsApp-style voice and messaging tool. Before the change, users had to open a private chat thread with a friend to call them. The new feature allows users to call friends directly, and can also be used to introduce people less familiar with Messenger’s calling feature.
Meta says that voice and video calls on Messenger have increased by 40% since the beginning of 2020. Before that, the company added features available for encrypted messaging earlier this year, add reactions, stickers, replies and forward specific messages. Meta’s plan is to eventually make end-to-end encryption the default for Facebook and Instagram by 2023. The company also adds some AR effects to video calls, allowing users to experiment with filters, masks and animations.
New changes to Messenger will make .’s free messaging tool Meta better compete with rivals, including Google Voice, Viber, Signal and even WhatsApp which Meta bought in 2014.
