New generation BMW X1 increases in size, adds features

The third generation X1 increases in size, with design lines similar to the new “elder” X7. Depending on the market, the car is sold with two versions including the xDrive28i petrol engine with 4-wheel drive and the iX1 all-electric version.

X1 2023 has a length of 4,500 mm, which is 50 mm longer than the old generation. The wheelbase is also 22 mm longer, reaching 2,692 mm. Width and height are also slightly increased, to 1,844 mm and 1,643 mm respectively.

Along the body are sharp lines and also longer than the old generation, making the X1 even more similar to the X7 when viewed from afar. Rims with optional sizes include 18, 19 and 20 inches.

The interior design has changed almost completely, with a 10.3-inch digital clock paired with a 10.7-inch infotainment screen. This design once impressed when it first appeared on the new i4 and iX, and now in turn applies to other BMW products.

This setup supports iDrive 8 operating system – the latest version of BMW’s home infotainment system and also first appearing on electric vehicles. Navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Upgrades are done via OTA.

Dual-zone climate control is standard, and automatic sensor-activated wipers and headlights are also available. Even the standard versions have four USB-C charging ports, two 12V outlets and a range of driver assistance systems. The rear seats can be folded 40/20/40.

Like before, BMW equips the crossover with safety features such as adaptive cruise control with Stop and Go, traffic jam assist and lane keeping. In addition, automatic front emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and blind spot detection are also standard.

The new generation X1 standard version is equipped with a 2-liter, turbo, 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 248 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, an increase of 13 horsepower and 37 Nm compared to the old generation. Meanwhile, the xDrive28 version is also only 11 kg heavier than before – a not too big difference compared to the increase in size and power.

The new X1 uses a new DCT dual-clutch transmission, which the company says helps the car accelerate from 0-97 km / h in 6.2 seconds, down about 0.2 seconds compared to the old generation. Versions equipped with the M Sport package have paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

The M Sport versions also feature exterior and technical differences, including an adaptive suspension, an M steering wheel and sport seats. Optional 20-inch rims and run-flat tires under the M Sport package help X1 reach a maximum speed of 240 km / h while the standard version is 214 km / h. X1 has a ground clearance of 205 mm.

The BMW X1 xDrive28 is expected to be available at US dealers in the fourth quarter. The crossover is not the German company’s top-selling product, compared to the “elder” X3 and X5, but proves important in reaching younger customers.

In Vietnam, the current generation X1 sells only one version of sDrive18i xLine LCI with a starting price of VND 1,859 billion.
