Founded in 1946, Giang is known as one of the four “coffee pillars” of the land of capital: Nhan – Nhi – Di – Giang.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tri Hoa, the youngest son of Nguyen Van Giang, the creator of egg coffee, Mr. Giang was formerly a bartender for the 5-star Sofitel Metropole Hanoi hotel. That day, because of the lack of fresh milk, Mr. Giang devised a way to use eggs to prepare and from there, egg coffee was born.

This special drink quickly became popular, so Mr. Giang decided to quit his job at Sofitel in 1946 and build his own brand.

“At that time, there was no store, my father rented a place to sell temporarily, then bought a house at 90 Cau Go to officially open. In 1955, the government confiscated private establishments in the form of ‘public private’. joint venture’, all of them go to the public fund. My father and everyone else go to the state to sell goods, no longer have his own store,” Mr. Hoa once shared with the press.

In 1969, after about 14 years of working in the government, Mr. Giang retired and was given another house at 7 Hang Gai. At that time, the private sector was not allowed to trade in rice and coffee, so the whole family only sold black bean tea. When a regular customer comes to ask to buy coffee.

Later, the economy was more open, especially in 1986, when the state opened the economy, business was also more favorable accordingly.

However, around 1988-1989, when Giang died, his descendants gradually separated to open their own egg cafes, two of which are Giang coffee (Nguyen Huu Huan) and Dinh coffee (Dinh Tien Hoang, Bo). Lake). In addition, there is another Giang coffee shop in Yen Phu opened by Mr. Hoa’s brother.

“The old man taught them all the same recipe, but observant people will realize that each taste in each restaurant is different, including the style of decoration, because each person’s perception and absorption is completely different.” .

Mr. Hoa said Giang’s menu has many creative drinks from eggs such as egg rum, egg beer, egg cocoa, egg green beans…but egg coffee is still the main dish.

In Hanoi today, there are many shops that also sell egg coffee with basic ingredients including coffee, egg yolk, condensed milk… However, the difference between Giang and these shops lies in the techniques of the people. He explained, “Just a little bit faster, just a little slower, the taste of the coffee will be different. Just like there are many people playing the piano, not everyone can reach Dang Thai Son’s level. can do”.

Every day, the shop sells about 1,500 cups of coffee and 70% of visitors are tourists. Of which, 50% are international visitors and 50% are domestic tourists.

After more than 70 years of preserving the brand name only in Hanoi’s old quarter, at the end of April 2018, Giang “exported” to Japan, in Yokohama, a port city 30-40 minutes by train from Tokyo. Egg coffee cups and egg cocoa are also placed in a bowl of hot water to keep the drink warm like it is served in Hanoi. The price for each cup of egg coffee here is 480 Japanese yen (about 100,000 VND).
