The richest throne in Asia changed hands again

Mukesh Ambani – the owner of the multi-industry empire Reliance Industries has just returned to the position of the richest person in Asia after surpassing fellow billionaire Gautam Adani.

Follow Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Ambani is currently worth 101 billion USD – higher than the 95.8 billion USD of Adani. Since the beginning of the year, the owner of Reliance Industries’ fortune has increased by $11.3 billion.

The 65-year-old billionaire is also one of 7 people who owns a fortune of $100 billion or more, according to statistics of Bloomberg. The remaining faces include Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bernard Arnault, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Larry Page.

Since inheriting the refining and petrochemicals business from his late father’s empire in 2005, Ambani has transformed the energy conglomerate into a retail, tech and e-commerce giant.

His telecommunications company, which started offering services in 2016, is now the dominant carrier in the Indian market. Ambani’s retail and technology ventures raised about $27 billion last year through equity sales to investors ranging from Facebook and Google to KKR & Co. and Silver Lake.

Musk Ambani once lost the richest position in Asia to Gautam Adani – the head of Adani Group. In early April, Mr. Adani first joined the 12-digit fortune club of Bloomberg. After that, Adani’s fortune continued to rise sharply, surpassing two Google co-founders Larry Page, Sergey Brin and legendary investor Warren Buffett. At one point, Mr. Adani’s fortune increased to equal the world’s fourth-richest billionaire Bill Gates.

Although no longer in the group of 100 billion USD, the billionaire born in 1962 is still the person who has made the most money in the Top 20 richest people in the world since the beginning of 2022. Mr. Adani’s fortune has increased by 19.3 billion USD in this year.
