The risk of malaria transmission in HCMC is very low

Since 2011, Ho Chi Minh City has not detected a case of intrinsic malaria. In 2020, this city is recognized as malaria-free.

According to the Center for Disease Control of Ho Chi Minh City (HCDC), the malaria cases recorded in the city recently came from malaria endemic areas at home and abroad. The results of insect monitoring showed that no malaria-transmitting mosquitoes were detected in Ho Chi Minh City. The risk of malaria transmission in the city is very low.

From 2011 up to now, HCMC has not detected any cases of intrinsic malaria and has been recognized for malaria elimination since 2020. The city is currently in the phase of “Prevention of returning malaria after elimination”. HCDC still maintains activities to monitor cases, disease-transmitting insects and professional activities under the guidance of the Ministry of Health.

According to HCDC, Ho Chi Minh City is an area with great population fluctuations and many end-line hospitals are concentrated. Therefore, every year, the city still records a number of malaria cases, who are from areas where malaria is circulating at home and abroad.

According to the HCDC, the Anopheles mosquito that transmits malaria is also known as the dagger mosquito. Malaria mosquitoes can be distinguished from other mosquitoes in the perched position. The shape of the mosquito that transmits malaria is similar to a pole, so it is also known as the shock wave mosquito. Other mosquitoes when perched have a slightly hunched body, and the abdomen is slightly bent towards the plane of the mosquito.

In 2021, the whole country has 465 malaria patients, a decrease of 67% compared to 2020, no cases of severe malaria, no malaria deaths. In the South, there were 43 cases of malaria recorded, a decrease of 76% compared to 2020. Currently, there are 36 provinces and cities that have been recognized to eliminate malaria. Vietnam is striving to achieve malaria elimination by 2030.

The health sector recommends that people actively take measures to prevent mosquito bites to prevent dengue fever – which is an infectious disease circulating in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as to prevent other mosquito-borne diseases.

Previously, the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City said it had received 2 cases of malignant malaria, who were imported from Africa. The patients hospitalized in severe condition, parasite density is very high.
