The woman was discovered to have brain cancer thanks to a strange sign

Feeling dizzy and numb in her left hand, Lucy decided to go to the emergency room immediately.

Lucy Garcia knew something was wrong when she woke up at 4am on 11/11/2021. She felt the room turn. Her left hand was also numb.

During the next 3 hours, the 35-year-old mother still did not feel better. Her husband, Jason Garcia, took her to the emergency room in Cedar Park (Texas, USA).

At first, the emergency room staff thought Lucy was just dizzy, but because she had numbness in her left hand, they performed a CT scan. The results showed an abnormality.

Lucy was transferred to St. David in Austin. After a CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging, Lucy was informed that she had a brain tumor in the temporal lobe.

Her symptoms – dizziness and numbness – disappeared but helped doctors find the tumor early.

She had a grade 2 glioma called astrocytoma, which was determined to be slow growing. Hari Tumu, a neurosurgeon at St. David’s, said the tumor was 3×3 cm.

Worldwide, an estimated 300,000 people will be diagnosed with a primary brain or spinal cord tumor in 2020.

In the US, about 25,000 people are diagnosed with brain cancer each year. Five-year survival rates vary according to the type of cancer and the age of the patient. For Lucy’s tumor type and age, the survival rate was 73%. By age 55, this figure is 26%.

In most cases, tumors are only discovered when they are large and cause symptoms, says Dr. Tumu.

Symptoms may include headache, nausea or vomiting, numbness in the legs or arms, seizures, loss of consciousness, personality changes, loss of balance, blurred vision.

On January 12, Lucy had her tumor removed. The scan results showed that a small part of the tumor was still there and was removed by doctors on January 17.

During the surgeries, Dr. Tumu kept Lucy awake because the tumor was in the part that controls her voice. He let the patient count down, talking to her while the tumor was being removed to make sure he didn’t touch the area that affected speech.

Now, Lucy has a space in her brain where the tumor used to be. She will have magnetic resonance imaging every 3 months to make sure the tumor doesn’t grow back. Currently, she can still talk normally.

Past experience warns Lucy not to take any symptoms lightly and not hesitate in life.

“I’m a planner. I used to put everything aside to be better prepared,” says Lucy, but now she wants to get things done as soon as possible.

This month, Lucy and her husband will bring their children to Disney World to play.
