Thyroid cancer occurs when there is a change in the DNA inside thyroid cells that causes them to grow uncontrollably and create a tumor. It’s not clear what causes this change, but there are several things that can increase your risk, such as:

– Thyroiditis or underactive thyroid

– Family history of thyroid cancer

Childhood radiation exposure (radiotherapy)

– Fat

Thyroid cancer treatment depends on the type of cancer you have and how far it has spread. Treatment methods may include:

Surgery – to remove part or all of the thyroid gland.

– Radioactive iodine treatment – you swallow a radioactive substance that travels through the blood and kills cancer cells

– External radiation therapy – a machine is used to direct a beam of radiation at cancer cells to destroy them

– Chemotherapy and targeted therapies – drugs used to kill cancer cells

In fact, about 9 out of 10 people with thyroid cancer are still alive and active for 5 years after being diagnosed with the disease. Many people with the disease have been cured and lead normal lives. However, the outlook for a cure depends on the type of cancer a person has.
